Hip Replacement Surgery

A direct anterior hip replacement surgery involves a smaller incision compared to a regular hip replacement procedure. This technique protects the abductor muscles, which play a crucial role in walking and stability, as they are not cut or sacrificed in this approach. Unlike traditional hip replacement surgeries, the anterior approach is performed from the front side of the hip.

The surgery can be conducted under either a spinal or general anesthetic. Dr. Lupo will replace the damaged socket in the pelvic bone with a prosthetic socket, securing it in place with screws if necessary. Additionally, any affected portion of the femur bone is removed, typically due to joint disease. A small canal is then created in the femur, allowing for the placement of a prosthetic stem and ball to recreate the hip joint.
